Awarness in Urban Slums –A UNICEF PROJECT

The UNICEF project was started in 2006. This project reaches out to youth in the age group of 15 to 25 years in urban slums in Bangalore district. Peer educators from the community are identified and trained to reach out to the youth in their slums to generate more awareness about HIV/AIDS and to encourage them to utilize the services available to them in the community.

The UNICEF PROJECT is collaboration between six NGOs based in Karnataka, 3 of who are from Bangalore. The leadership and management support is provided through an NGO called CARDTS through its Management Support Team, Karnataka (MST-K).Under this project ASHA Foundation reaches out to the youth of 15-25 years in 13 slums in Bangalore urban district. A total of 7,000 youth were to be reached through training of 140 peer educators. Each of these peer educators would be trained through 4 levels of training and each peer educators would reach out to 50 peers on a 1:1 basis. The youth were divided into 3 groups- MARA (Most at Risk Adolescent), EVA (Especially Vulnerable Adolescent) and AYNMAR (Adolescent Youth Not at Risk). The peer educators were selected from all the three groups. So far 10091 youth have benefited through this project.
